Michael was honored by his graduate students as Professor of the Year in 2002.


 

Michael Smith is Chair of the Department of Mass Communication at Campbell University. He is the author of more than 3000 articles for newspapers and magazines. He spent nearly a decade in newsrooms across the nation, writing for small community newspapers and large, metropolitan newspapers such as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has taught on the college or university level for more than 14 years.

Smith conducts research on Christianity and mass media. He has published scholarly articles in the Journal of Media and Religion, Journal of Mediated Communication, Newspaper Research Journal, and American Journalism among others. Smith has published three books including Worship in Franklin County: Sketches of faith from the mid-1700s to the Civil War, published in 1991 by University Press in Shippensburg, PA, and The Jesus newspaper, published by University Press of America in 2002.
